Scope and Content Note

This set of four scrapbooks contains photographs showing the members and activities of the Hawaii Rifles as well as newspaper clippings. The Hawaii Rifles were a volunteer defense unit based on the island of Hawaii. Clippings from the following publications are included: Honolulu Advertiser, Hilo Tribune Herald, and Hawaii Press. Additional material about the Hawaii Rifles (including accounts of the history of the unit) can be found using the card catalog for the HWRD located in the Moir Reading Room. According to the collection’s accession register (found in the ADMINISTRATIVE FILES series), these scrapbooks were donated to the collection by Ernest de Silva, chairman of the neighbor island committee of the Hawaii War Records Depository on the island of Hawaii.
