Scheduling files, 1963-2012
Scope and Contents
The scheduling files consist of all records from scheduling-related activities that occurred in Inouye’s Honolulu and Washington, D.C. offices. The records are organized by office, then by type of record.
Records from the Honolulu office include appointment materials, 1966-1976, 1979-2012, which include appointment requests, itineraries, correspondence with individuals and organizations concerning appointments, briefing materials and background information on people and places related to appointments, some transcripts of speeches that the Senator made at events, newspaper clippings, photographs from events, thank-you letters, and other records. Also included are invitations, 1984-1986, for general attendance at events and invitations to speak at events; bound appointment books, 1979-1997; and desk calendars, 1986-2009.
Records from the Washington, D.C. office include appointment materials, 1963-1982, 1989-1998, which are similar to those found in the records from the Honolulu office; files on speaking engagements, 1967-1968 and 1979, which contain materials concerning the scheduling of speeches, but also include transcripts of many of Inouye’s speeches that he gave during that time; invitations, 1963-1983, 1988-2012; and appointment books, 1962-2012. Also included are records on trips the Senator took specifically to Hawaii Island, 1982-1994; and records on trips to foreign countries, 1963-1982, which primarily consist of itineraries and background information relevant to the trips, but also include photographs, newspaper clippings and correspondence. Trips of note are the “Mansfield Mission” of 1965, which was a fact-finding mission to almost 20 cities around the world; and a trip to the Middle East by the Subcommittee on Foreign Operations, of which Inouye was chair.
Note that invitations from the D.C. office from the late 1980s on often contain more materials than just the invitations, such as itineraries for events and correspondence. Note also that all invitations that were regretted by the Senator’s offices have been discarded.
