Books, 1915-1960
Scope and Contents
The books in the Senator’s collection are a selection of the books that were received with the papers. Most books were published works of a reference nature, for example, or Government Printing Office publications, which can be readily found in libraries elsewhere. These books, if they did not contain any notations or inscriptions, were not retained with the Senator’s papers. The books that were kept and that comprise this series include books that relate to the Senator directly, and books that are about other subjects, but that contain notations or inscriptions that add informational value to the collection.
Included are the following:
- The Senator’s copy of a Japanese reader when he was in junior high school.
- Books from the Senator’s years at McKinley High School in Honolulu (class of 1942), including the Senator’s copy of a first aid handbook from the U.S. Office of Civilian Defense, perhaps which he used when he was a volunteer for the Red Cross; and his yearbooks, 1940-1942, with signatures from fellow students.
- Books from the Senator’s years at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, including various texts on science, math and history; and a variety of loose papers that were found in the books, such as examinations, term papers, and notes.
- Maggie Inouye’s copies of the yearbook “Uniki” of University High School, where she taught.
- Records on books written by the Senator, including a typescript for a book entitled Go for Broke (not the same work as the work by the same name that appeared in the Reader’s Digest), typescripts for two different drafts of Journey to Washington, and page proofs of the latter from the publisher, with hand-marked corrections.
- A Japanese bible published in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture in December 1915. The bible has the inscription “Kame Imanaga, Puukolii Maui” and therefore it was presumably owned by the Senator’s mother.
- Finally, some miscellaneous papers that were found loose with the books. Included with these is a program for commencement exercises at Mid-Pacific Institute for the Senator’s father’s graduation from Mills High School, 1922; a program from a memorial service for men from Oahu killed in action, McKinley High School, 1945; and a wedding photo from 1951 of a couple identified as Kuulei and Perceo.
