Container Summary
[Kalaheo, Kauai] Feels he doesn’t know himself, the “man within the man.” Hasn’t painted anything new since he came back, but has made some cuts that he hasn’t printed yet. One is a black and white print of a Japanese mother with sleeping babe on her back. The other is a five-color print of Japanese boatmen on the sea. Mentions that Madge [Tennent?] has two portraits at Gump’s. He believes she is extremely wise and thoughtful in her manner of exhibition as well as in her paintings, and always sincere. She has gained more conviction in her work, she is surer of her subjects and methods of presentation. Her personality delights him for she is quite outspoken. She is “adept at sarcasm, referring to her attitude on the Tearoom showing that tickled me very much.” Sent Blake a book on Graham on loan. Mentions Blake coming to Kauai and says the only thing of interest is the Bon Odori, a peasant harvest dance. He used to dance it about eight years ago, but now doesn’t.
