[postmark corner torn off] He’s back in N.Y and not so happy after all, even though he is among close friends. He proposes that Blake take 2 “Kakemono” as security and lend him $50. Doesn’t want his father to know about this. Doi has pawned his books. Existence is hard and he is desperate, even his art gives him little satisfaction. Second letter in same envelope, undated: He wanted to suffer, but feels different now. Thanks Blake for the check. Feels ashamed of his words in previous letter. The Downtown Gallery took all the watercolors he gave them, admired his lithographs, took 2 oil paintings, but Mrs. Halpert [?] didn’t like his nudes which Doi thinks are the better works. Discusses the Downtown Gallery and its success. Thanks Blake for is $30 [$35?] check; got his books back from the pawn shop.
