Photographs
Scope and Contents
The Neil Abercrombie photo collection is a diverse collection of photos taken with Neil Abercrombie and constituents/friends/family during the many years that he served in his various seats in office. Aside from the series categorized by office, there are also 3 other photograph series titled Campaign (photographs that were separate from the office held and held by the campaign offices), Party Politics (miscellaneous photographs related to political issues), and Personal (mostly photo albums documenting subjects such as a delegation trip or meetings with the President, that have no particular specified timeline).
A majority of the collection is related to Abercrombie’s political career, which include meetings with other politicians, speeches and congressional hearings, seminars and presentations, ceremonial openings, and other related subject matter. However, a lot of the collection is also composed of some of his more personal photographs which include family photographs and picnics, dinner parties, and sports and outdoor events, all which are more prevalent in the Honolulu City Council and State Legislature subseries. Objects that stand out in these early collections were his famous, legendary, and iconic Signature Classic Checkered Taxi Cab with his portrait painted on the doors that he used to promote his campaigns. Also included in the City Council and State Legislature were a lot of photographs with Abercrombie witnessing historical events such as the inauguration of the Queen Liliʻuokalani Statue in 1982, the opening of buildings and businesses in Hawai’i, and his attendance at historical bill signings at the Hawaiʻi State Capital. Once Abercrombie becomes a U.S Congressman in 1990, the content becomes slightly more formal and a majority of the pictures are taken in Washington, D.C. Materials in the Congress suberies contain photos of many of Hawaiʻi’s politicians. They are usually together in discussion or sometimes witnessing historical legislation such as the Hawaiian Home Lands Recovery Act signed by Bill Clinton, in which Senator Daniel Inouye, Senator Daniel Akaka, Representative Patsy Mink, and others witness the signing and are seen shaking hands with the president. There are also many photographs in the U.S Congress subseries that depict Abercrombie taking photographs with interns, staff, and Hawaiʻi citizens in front of the U.S Capitol Building. Furthermore, there are many photographs with Abercrombie standing next to famous and notable celebrities including Tom Cruise, Martin Scorsese, Willie Nelson, the band *NSYNC, the band Boyz II Men, and others. The Congress subseries is where a bulk of the photographic material will be found.
