The Speeches subseries is arranged in chronological order, with each individual speech or public address contained in a separate folder. Many folders contain multiple copies, drafts, annotated copies, research material, or other media that was originally filed with the speech document(s).

Indexes or partial indexes created by Senator Akaka’s office have been separated into individual folders when available, and can be found before the speech folders for the indexed year.

The Speeches subseries encompasses Senator Akaka’s floor speeches on legislation; addresses to unions, businesses, or associations; graduation and commencement speeches; statements for appearances at conferences, banquets, and celebrations; and campaign speeches for re-election or in support of legislators belonging to the Democratic party of Hawaiʻi. Talking points and/or communications regarding Senator Akaka’s speaking engagements, videotaped statements, interviews, or public appearances, even if the speech document itself is not available, are included.

A folder titled “Important DKA speeches” by Senator Akaka’s staff was preserved without rearrangement, and can be found in box PR7.
