Working Papers, 1940-1983
Scope and Contents
This series has been divided into five subseries that parallel the subseries found in series 1: 1) “Liliu,” 2) “Impressions of Hawaii,” 3) “Poeme Ancien,” 4) “America,” and 5) General Papers.
Subseries 1, “Liliu,” is the most extensive, containing draft libretti for each act of the opera, correspondence, news clippings, and materials related to the Liliu Festival, a celebration of Hawaiian music and culture that was to introduce excerpts of the opera and raise money for its production. Due to financial and legal trouble between Borisoff and Amalu, the event took place with a reduced program and without the performance of the “Liliu” excerpts.
Subseries 2, “Impressions of Hawaii,” deals primarily with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra’s two performances of the work and includes advertisements, programs, correspondence, rehearsal schedules, and news clippings. Also included are two photographs that were found among the “Impressions” materials but whose provenance and significance are unknown.
Subseries 3, “Poeme Ancien,” contains notes and programs related to the composition and performance of the piece.
Subseries 4, “America,” contains news clippings referencing the work, including a letter to the editor by Borisoff.
Subseries 5, General Papers, contains notes and lyrics related to other compositions, several copyright registration certificates, and two pedagogical books by Borisoff, one about composition and one about cello technique.
