Photographs, circa 1915 - 2015
Scope and Contents
This series is dedicated to the audiovisual materials in the collection, including photographs and video. The photographs span Murayama’s entire lifetime, capturing snapshots of moments from childhood, adolescence, school, military service, young adulthood, middle age, and old age. They record many significant moments in Murayama’s life and career such as school commencements, book signings, and award ceremonies. Many people are also present in these photographs. The folder containing old photographs of Murayama’s Japanese relatives is especially interesting because it allows viewers to put faces to the names of characters in Five Years On A Rock. One of the photographs in this folder was later incorporated into the cover design for Dying In A Strange Land. The photographs in this series carry important historical significance as well. For example, the photos from Murayama’s military service not only capture his life as a soldier, but also document the repatriation of Japanese civilians from Taiwan after the war ended.
The video materials in this series are comprised of two DVDs. One of these DVDs is a slideshow of photographs from a Dying In A Strange Land book signing in 2008. An audio recording of an interview with Murayama plays as a voice over. The other DVD is a videotaped interview with Murayama in his San Francisco home and a garden tour hosted by his wife Dawn. These two items are especially meaningful because they are the only place in this collection where it is possible to watch footage of Milton Murayama and hear his voice. There is a third compact disc stored with the DVDs that contains two digitized photographs of Murayama during his military service.
