Consists of an article dealing with two concerns: 1) Establishing the Native Hawaiian land rights by examining the nature of the relationship between the people and the land in Hawaiian times (prior to 1778); 2) Determining the extent to which those rights may have been extinguished as a result of the Great Mahele by examining the background and results of events mid-19th century that changed the traditional relationship between the Hawaiian people and their land, with particular emphasis on the Mahele of 1848, and the Kuleana Land Act of 1850.
