Japanese Internment and Relocation Files: The Hawaii Experience
Scope Note
The Japanese Internment and Relocation Files: The Hawaii Experience (JIRHE) are comprised of materials collected by Professor Dennis Ogawa, from the American Studies Department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, in connection with the National Endowment for the Humanities Grant RS 20125-81-1663. This collection includes copies of official government documents, correspondence, photographs, negatives, and maps, all documenting the experiences of Japanese internees from Hawaii during World War II. It also contains taped oral history interviews and transcripts from twenty-four internees from Hawaii.

• Transcripts:
Transcripts of the Oral History materials cannot be photocopied or otherwise duplicated. However, patrons may read and quote material.
• Taped Interviews:
There are no releases for the Oral History taped interviews. Interested parties should contact Dr. Dennis Ogawa in American Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. There is no access to the Oral Histories without Dr. Ogawa’s permission.

Provenance
This collection was donated to the Special Collections Department of Hamilton Library on February 21, 1984, by Dr. Dennis M. Ogawa, professor in the American Studies Department. It was transferred to the Archives and Manuscripts Department from the Hawaiian Collection by Ms. Joan Hori on October 8, 2009.
Existence and Location of Originals
Most of the documents and photographs in this collection are copies from the National Archives, Red Cross Offices in Washington D.C. and Switzerland (RC), Defense Audiovisual Agency (DAVA) Still Photo Depository (all materials have since been transferred to the National Archives), Center of Military History (CH), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Franklin D. Roosevelt Library (FDRL), and Japan's Diplomatic Record Office (JDRO). See Folder Nos. 444-446 for a list, brief descriptions, and origins of the documents in this collection.
