Masao Sakagami photographs
Scope and Contents Note
The materials include 45 photographic prints taken by 442nd Regimental Combat Team veteran Masao Sakagami, CDs and DVDs containing several hundred additional digitized images from Sakagami's collection, and a bound volume facsimile reproduction of a photoalbum / scrapbook (also represented among the digitized files).
The prints, all annotated, depict 100th Battalion and 42nd Regimental Combat Team veterans' reunions from 1992 to 1996. Most of the images depict either reunions that occurred in Hawai'i and/or veterans from Hawai'i. Annotations--written on the backs of the photos and/or on accompanying slips of paper--generally include the location and date of the photograph as well as the names of the people in the photo. Other information, such as veterans' Battalion and Company identification and more details about the specific reunion depicted, sometime show up as well.
The DVD holds primarily photographs from Sakagami’s time in WWII that had previously been scanned and archived by DENSHO; the images include both official photos and Sakagami’s snapshots, and feature 442nd soldiers in New York City, Florence, Livorno, Pisa, Camp Blanding (Florida), Camp Kilmer (NJ), Seattle, etc. Some of the photos on the DVD have locations and/or subjects identified in their file titles, but not all. The DVD also includes a few scans of documents related to Sakagami’s tour of duty (e.g. tour orders, ration card, Leave of Action, etc.).
One CD contains images scanned and converted from negatives. Among the CD's 52 image files are two color scans of the set's film processing envelope (from a photolab in Livorno, Italy, dated November, 1946), and 50 files containing 32 original images: 16 "masters," each depicting a two-shot strip, and 34 closeups--and occasionally edits--of the individual shots.
A second CD (of which the collection contains two copies) contains 205 images of individual photos from one of Sakagami's scrapbooks, plus a pdf of the entire scrapbook including photo captions. These captions often include the home states/cities of the soldiers depicted, and can be used to cross-reference other images. Other captions include photo locations. The images depict individual and group shots of 442nd soldiers, camp/barracks scenes, and sight-seeing/recreational trips to Italy (including Pisa, Florence, and Milan), Switzerland (including skiing and a visit to Davos), an outing to Pen Beach on the Mediterranean, the shipride 'home', etc. The bound volume facsimile is a reproduction--printed with the Shutterfly service--of the scrapbook comprised by this set of files.
A third CD with 482 images appears to contain a selection from the other discs, plus additional photographs. Images duplicated from the other discs include both snapshots and official photos, and feature 442nd soldiers in NYC, Florence, Leghorn/Livorno, Pisa, Switzerland, Camp Blanding (Florida), Camp Kilmer (NJ), on Pen Beach, etc. Non-duplicate material includes photos from the 1940s (e.g. images of Ume Sakagami, a scan of a guest card for a hotel run by Headquarters Command in Florence, photos of Venice, etc.) and several color photos (including a few panoramas) of a relatively recent 100th and/or 442nd commemoration, with the surviving veterans sitting on a stage along with speakers, etc. Along with these are several photos of (Sakagami?) WWII photos projected on a screen at a Seattle Nisei Veterans Committee function (perhaps the same event).
