Conditions Governing Access
The donor has restricted the documents in one subseries within the 'McEwan personal and miscellaneous papers' series; all access to these materials--even copies that had previously been labeled as access copies--requires Dr. McEwan's prior review and permission.
Beyond that, other scattered documents in the collection are restricted due to privacy concerns: If and when researchers request the files containing those documents, archivists will determine whether these items also require Dr. McEwan's prior permission or if it would instead be possible to provide access to a redacted copy of the document(s).
Conditions Governing Use
Most if not all materials in the 'AIDS,' 'Same-sex marriage,' 'Books,' and 'Video' series--plus a sizeable portion of the materials in other series--fall under the copyright of their publishers and/or creators. Researchers wishing to reproduce or otherwise use the materials in ways that would fall outside of the provisions of fair use would need to contact those copyright holders for permission.

Separated Materials
Various material has been separated from the collection and is slated for eventual deaccession as of January 2020: 1) Approximately six cubic feet of documents—primarily duplicates, but also some private information—will be deaccessioned and either saved for give-aways, shredded, or returned to Dr. McEwan, depending on the nature of the item. 2) Approximately one cubic foot each of videocassettes and documents were affected by mold upon gift to the Archives; work is underway to determine what, if any, proportion of this material can be salvaged, remediated, and re-integrated into the collection. 3) A small amount of material has been transferred to the Ramsey collection at the request of both donors.
