Biographical / Historical

The Hawaii Computer Art Society (HCAS) was formed in 1986 by several Honolulu artists exploring the then-new medium of digital art. Among them were Rodney Chang, Bobby Crockett, Arthur Nelander and Ray O'Leary. On December 5, 1995, HCAS was officially registered with the State of Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. At the January 2000 meeting, HCAS formally changed its name to Digital Art Society of Hawaii (DASH). A new logo and business card were designed by DASH member Jim Egan. In 2007 DASH established a Yahoo! user group to foster communication and discussion; after a few years it was little used and is no longer active. DASH's mission is to promote digital fine art to its members, other artists, and the general public. To that end, the organization sponsors exhibitions of digital art and presents workshops and demonstrations conducted by and for members and non-members. The website was created in 1999: digitalarthawaii.org. Most members were and are artists in other media as well as digital art.
