Biographical / Historical
The Center for Pacific Islands Studies directed a project to translate German publications on Micronesia, part of the Ergebnisse der Südsee Expedition publications, into English. Elizabeth A. Murphy and Ruth E. Runeborg, both of whom were at the time graduate students at the University of Hawaiʻi, translated several sections in 1983. The Ponape volumes were largely translated by Runeborg with editing and additions by Murphy. The translations were never published as problems arose as to cultural content and context.

Custodial History
In 1991, Dr. Robert Kiste, director of the Center for Pacific Islands Studies, donated files that contained the translations and associated documents to the Pacific Collection at the University of Hawaiʻi Library, as he felt that the work completed should be available through the Pacific Collection. In 1995, Elizabeth A. Murphy sent her files from the translation project as a donation to the Pacific Collection "in memory of Renée Heyum," Pacific Curator Emerita of the University of Hawaiʻi Library.
Processing Information
The gifts of Dr. Robert Kiste and Elizabeth A. Murphy have been combined to create the files of the translations and materials used for the translations that comprise this collection. Its organization follows that of the original German text; parts 1-3 are called volumes 1-3 in the translations.
