Biographical Note

Dr. Andrew Wing Sing In was the dean of the University of Hawaii College of Education (COE) from 1979 to his retirement in 1984.

He was born in Honolulu to Ms. Yan Ho Ching and Mr. Koon Ling In in 1921. He attended Castle Kindergarten, Royal [Elementary] School, Central Junior High School, and McKinley High School. After graduating from McKinley in 1938, he attended the University of Hawaii’s Teachers College (now known as the College of Education) and earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 1946.

Dr. In’s undergraduate education was interrupted by five years of military service (due to World War II). He decided to get a graduate degree to “catch up” to his peers who did not enroll in military service. He was accepted to Ohio State University, University of California, University of Minnesota, and New York University (NYU). He chose NYU and earned a master’s degree in secondary education and a doctoral degree in education administration curriculum supervision.

Upon his graduation from NYU in 1951, he accepted a job offer at the University of Hawaii as assistant professor supervising student teachers at the University Laboratory School. In 1956, he was promoted to the position of principal in the Lab School. In 1960, he became the chair of the Division of Secondary Education. In 1966, he became the chair of the newly created COE Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Dr. In spent a year in Taiwan on sabbatical, and upon his return he was asked by his mentor Dean Hubert V. Everly to serve as assistant dean of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. In was appointed acting dean when Dean Everly retired in 1979.

In 1980, Chancellor Durwood Long appointed Dr. In to the position of dean of the COE, where he was influential in creating a graduate doctoral program for the college. He retired from the College of Education in 1984 at the age of 63.

Dr. In passed away on May 26, 2009.

The Andrew W. S. In College Collaboration Center in Wist Hall was dedicated on December 11, 2012. There is currently a scholarship established by Dr. In, the Andrew W. S. & Jennie L. In Scholarship for Graduate Study Fund, for graduate students pursuing a graduate Education degree.

(Biographical information from Dr. In’s interview with Warren Nishimoto as published in the University of Hawaii College of Education Educational Perspectives, volume 40(2), pages 35- 42.)
