Biographical / Historical
James C. Hubbard was a Hawaii landscape architect. After graduating from Washington State
University in 1960, he came to Honolulu to work at the then-new East-West Center.
In 1964, he designed and managed “Flora Pacifica” – a combined cultural and horticultural
exhibition that ran until 1977. It was very popular, requiring larger and larger venues over the
years. Hubbard was also a sought after speaker on garden and botanical subjects to general and
specialized audiences. His deep interest in and knowledge of Hawaii’s landscapes and plants led
him to publish several books on those subjects, often as co-author with horticulturist Horace
Clay.
He designed many residential gardens, including for the Jean Charlot House, with Charlot as a
collaborator. His larger projects include gardens at the Queen Emma Summer Palace, The
Contemporary Museum [now Spalding House], and Kahala Mall. He was the landscape architect
for Tamarind Park in Bishop Square, a well used gathering place in downtown Honolulu.
Hubbard died in 1997, aged 63.
