Scope and Contents

17 large (20 inches tall by 25 inches long) scrapbooks filled with newspaper clippings. Most of them seem to deal with the Americans of Japanese Ancestry (AJA) experience here in Hawaii. Some of the clippings are in Japanese.

Biographical / Historical

Lorraine Murai Mortimer, wife of former University of Hawaii President Kenneth Mortimer, was born in Honolulu around 1938. After graduating from Roosevelt High School, she attended the University of Pennsylvania where she met her husband. She obtained a degree in microbiology and worked for several years until her daughter was born.

Lorraine returned to Hawaii in 1993 when her husband became President of the University of Hawaii. An active community member, she participated as a docent at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and the Hawaii Food Bank. She also served as a board member to the Whatcom Literary Council, St. Luke's Foundation, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Volunteer Health Resources Network. She and her husband remained in Hawaii for eight years while he served as President, after which they moved back to Bellingham, Washington. She passed away 4 February 2005 after battling blood cancer for several years.

Physical Description

The pages of the scrapbooks are very acidic. There are many holes in them from bugs eating the paper. Some of the clippings are no longer attached to the pages as the stickiness of the glue has worn off.
