Biographical / Historical
The records of the University of Hawai´i at Manoa Preservation Department reflect the activities, philosophy, and history of the department. The department was founded in 1983, as a “marking and mending” unit, until the Preservation Department was officially established in 1990 by transferring staff from three Library units.
Aggie Quigg, the head of the department, replicated the program from the Preservation program of University of California at Berkeley. Ms. Quigg, established a program that included conservation, bindery, pest management, and reformatting. After Ms. Quigg’s retirement in 1996, Lynn Ann Davis was hired as the head of the department. Ms. Davis continued to build on Ms. Quigg’s established program.
The department moved into a new facility in 2000. This new facility was part of the Library Addition, with a new lab space, which included future preservation needs including a paper treatment lab and digital photography lab. This space also incorporated core workspace for conservation treatment, bindery, reformatting and pest management. The department continues to be the only Preservation Department in a library or archive in Hawai´i and the American Pacific
