Biographical Sketch
Marian Takagi's father, Kamekichi Kirita, owned a store in Kohala on the Big Island, selling goods to plantation workers. He was also appointed a consular agent in 1938. Kamekichi was arrested on the night of Dec. 7, 1941. Like many other individuals of Japanese Ancestry who were arrested that night, he was eventually sent to the mainland where he was transfered from detention center to detention center. The rest of the family (Toka Kirita with her seven children) was eventually sent by boat to California and then on by train to a detention center in Jerome, Arkansas. Finally, over a year later, Kamekichi was also sent to Jerome where he was reunited with his family.
