Biographical / Historical

The dance program at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa was formally established around 1966 by Carl Wolz, who originally came to Hawai'i as an East-West Center fellow studying Japanese dance. Wolz filled many roles during the early years of the program, including administrator, choreographer, instructor, director, and lead dancer. Despite Wolz's experience with Asian dance, his program focused primarily on ballet and modern dance, along with dance history, composition, and notation. Most courses on dance traditions of Asian and Pacific cultures were administered separately, based in the music department until 1989, when the programs were combined into the Department of Theatre and Dance. For more information on the UHM Dance Program and Carl Wolz, see Kamins and Potter, Malamalama: A History of the University of Hawai'i, University of Hawai'i Press, 1998, p. 227, and Wolz's New York Times obituary.

Custodial History

Beyond the general origins of the records in the UHM Dance Program, the precise provenance of the materials is not known. The records may have been collected as official documentation of or resources for the Dance Program, or they may have come from Wolz's personal files. Because Wolz was the primary instructor and sole administrator of the program for some time, the line between personal and corporate records in this context is not well-defined.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

No accession records remain on file to confirm the source and date of acquisition. The materials in the collection may have been deposited by the UHM Dance Program (if before 1989), the UHM Department of Theatre and Dance (officially formed in 1989), or Carl Wolz.

Processing Information

Organizational structure and file names applied during processing in 2016 were based as closely as possible on the existing order and folder labels. It is not known whether this arrangement reflects the original order of the materials or was imposed upon accession.
