Biographical / Historical

Spencer Tinker assumed the position as director of the Aquarium after Frederick A. Potter retired the position in 1940. Tinker was the second director of the Aquarium and oversaw the construction of a new building 100 yards south of the original site; a blueprint of this building can be found in the collection. The new Aquarium building opened in 1955 and is still in use today. Tinker retired the position in 1973. Prior to his appointment at the Aquarium, he served on the faculty of University of Hawaii's Zoology Department and is well-known for his books on Pacific marine biology; the collection contains his personal illustrations accompanied by excerpts from his classic text, Hawaiian Fishes.
