The Dr. Leonard D. Tuthill collection has been organized into six series: Catalogues and Publications, Correspondence with subseries Official Related to Position of Provost and Personal, Event Brochures, Newspaper Clippings, Photographs, and Scrapbook.

The “Catalogues and Publications” series consists of documents regarding LCC’s opening (ceremony, speeches and programs), LCC’s dedication, accreditation, faculty salaries in 1953, expenditures, as well as directories. The date range from these items is 1953-1971.

The “Correspondence” series consists of two subseries “Official Related to Position of Provost” and “Personal”. The first subseries consists of only papers related to his position as Provost - which includes various letters, memos and other correspondence. One noteworthy item is a telegram from Representative Patsy T. Mink regarding the opening of LCC. The second subseries consists of only papers of a personal nature. These include mostly letters and calendars kept by Dr. Tuthill. Noteworthy items include a Sinclair Library card and a letter written by Dr. Tuthill himself to his family describing what the Tuthill’s had been up to in the span of one year.

The “Event Brochures” series consists of numerous personal and professional (related to his position of Provost) event brochures, invitations, and flyers for events Dr. Tuthill had been invited to and attended. One noteworthy item includes a program from a state event in which Senator Daniel Inouye was a speaker.

The “Newspaper & Clippings” series consists of local and community newspapers that mentioned news related to Leeward Community College that Dr. Tuthill collected.

The “Photographs” series consists of 10 Packets of photographs grouped by various activities and events in which Dr. Tuthill participated. Photographs include the construction of LCC, Staff picnic, LCC groundbreaking ceremony, picnic for maintenance staff, temporary classrooms, meeting with participants (men) in upgrading program, campus life, dedication ceremonies, library construction, architects, student party, statewide conference on higher education at Church College of the Pacific.

The “Scrapbook” series consists of one scrapbook compiled by Dr. Tuthill containing highlights from his time as the first provost of LCC in 1967. Included are newspaper clippings (mostly undated) and photographs of the building construction of Leeward College. There are also a few pieces of personal correspondence including, Dr. Tuthills letter appointing him as Provost from 1967.

The material is in relatively good condition. Many papers were faded due to age and acidity, but they are still in good condition considering. Old paper clips and staples were removed and replaced with archival quality acid free paper. Newspaper clippings were highly acidic; many were photocopied for retention and the originals discarded.

Overview

Dr. Leonard D. Tuthill was a professor in the Department of Zoology and Entomology for the University of Hawaii from 1947. He was an active academic who was in 1967 named the first Provost of Leeward Community College in Honolulu. Dr. Tuthill was charged with originally opening the college in Pearl City Kai Elementary School. However in the spring of 1969, the College moved to its current location near the geographic center of Oahu, between Pearl City and Waipahu. Leeward Community College first welcomed 1,640 students and has grown to welcome approximately 7,000 students each semester. It is known as the first college in the UH system that was developed without connection to a pre-existing technical school.

The collection consists of loose catalogues, clippings and full local newspapers, correspondence, a collection of event brochures, and photographs. Some notable items also include a letter and telegram from Patsy Mink and a menu/invitation from Senator Daniel Inouye’s birthday celebration.

Biographical Note

Dr. Leonard D. Tuthill was born in Boxter Springs, Kansas on 24 January 1911. He graduated in 1930 with a graduate degree in Entomology from Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa. On 9 February 1947, Dr Tuthill, his wife Shirley and two children Rosalind, two and a half and Jonathan, one year old, arrived by Pan Pacific Airlines to Honolulu, Hawaii.

Dr. Tuthill was hired as academic staff in the department of entomology in 1947 when the College of Tropical Agriculture was formed at the University of Hawaii. He taught General Entomology, Insect Morphology, Systematic Entomology and Preparation of Scientific Manuscripts.

Dr. Tuthill acted as chairman of entomology for a few months until Dr. Henry A. Bess arrived in late 1948. At that time Dr.Tuthill continued to teach Insect Morphology, Systematic Entomology and established a new course in Advanced Systematics.

Dr. Tuthill has a vibrant academic career as he was the recipient of three Fulbright scholarships. The first in 1950 - 1951 in New Zealand - Taxonomy and Ecology of the Psyllidae of New Zealand, the second, 1958 - 1959 in Peru - Taxonomy and Ecology of the Psyllidae of Peru and the third, 1965-1966 in Egypt, - Lectureship in Systematic Entomology at the University of Cairo.

While a professor in the department of Zoology and Entomology Dr. Leonard D. Tuthill was one of the editors of the University of Hawaiʻi Press Journal Pacific Science originating in 1947, and still serves today as the official journal of the Pacific Science Association. Leonard D. Tuthill of the Dept. of Zoology and Entomology served as editor of vols. 2-7 (1948-53).

In 1967 Dr. Tuthill was appointed the first Provost of Leeward Community College (LCC) in Honolulu. He originally opened the college in Pearl City Kai Elementary School. In the spring of 1969, the College moved to its current location near the geographic center of O'ahu, between Pearl City and Waipahu. LCC welcomed over 1,640 students into buildings that once housed Pearl City Kai Elementary School. The first semester witnessed more than twice the anticipated number of students ready to explore the ”community college“ experience. It is unclear for how many years Dr. Tuthill remained the provost of LCC. Dr. Tuthill died on 27 May, 1988 at the age of 77 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
